[LOG] CLUB FAIR AT LUNCH

Who: EVERYONE
What: Lunch + Club Fair
When: End of the 2nd week of School
Where: Lunchroom and Courtyard

It's now a couple of weeks into school and it's about time for a real club fair hosted by the Student Council! Tables are set up around the lunchroom giving students a chance to talk to the different club presidents and members about joining. Lunch has been extended to an hour and a half today with a few of the teachers and students grilling up hot dogs and hamburgers for the student body. You were even given one of those little cards where you have to get signatures from 4 different club presidents proving you participated for credit!

Rocking back and forth on his feet slightly, aware that somehow some sort of social order had gone awry though unsure as to how, Leroy nodded. "Trivial?" he asked, trying not to appear visibly distressed.
Who thought that topics like "Placing political conditions on humanitarian aid to foreign countries is unjust" was trivial? He took a deep breath and forced another crooked smile, this one baring more teeth than the last.
"I... Would need to have that one explained to me? But not now. I don't want to upset this friendship so early on. I'm sure you have your reasons. We don't even know who's sponsoring the club or what their preference is. I'm sure we'll make excellent policy partners if it comes to that. We should find cardboard and a marker and make a sign. Gather a following. I mean, attract people. Yes. And please, tell me.... about yourself?"
That was the polite thing to ask, right? Increasingly unsure as he was as to Lawrence's presumed kind nature, it never hurt to be interested. People were interesting, after all.
"Tell me about why you're wearing a tie."

"Presumed kind"

Explained to him? As far as Lawrence was concerned it was a basic enough assessment that even a child would be able to see the logic in it. Governmental obligation to lessen the economic gap between its citizens", "Rehabilitation over retribution in the justice system", "Privacy is undervalued"... Honestly, it wouldn't be a longer conversation than listing off some examples. If Leroy couldn't wrap his head around it without assistance, he was beyond reason.
(But then he brought up the point about making a sign to garnish some attention so maybe there was something to him after all.)

All of Lawrence's previous mental traipsings ground to a halt.
No one had ever asked him why he was wearing a tie before. They normally would just comment on how weird it was and leave it at that. He looked down at it.
"I-... It completes my desired impression." He said finally, gesturing to the rest of himself.

The face Lawrence was making (blank and professional, a terrifying kind of dismissal) indicated that whatever Lawrence thought about Lincoln Douglas, it wasn't that theoretical debate was the highest form of thought experiment. "Desired impression?" Leroy asked, unable to stop smiling as he sorted through his backpack for a suitably large marker to make a sign on a piece of paper to attract attention. There was something hilarious about this, a high-schooler who wanted to wear a tie. Wasn't there all of life for the rest of that? "What grade are you in again?"

"Professional." He explained simply. Other things, such as 'clean', 'put together', and 'I'm better than you' 'authoritative' simply went without saying.

"I will be graduating this spring." Lawrence said, neatly covering any excitement in his voice with cool pride. "And yourself?" He added. It was only polite.

"Professional?" Leroy couldn't help but laugh. "A professional student? Does it pay well? Do you have health benefits?" He raised the debate sign up and finished snickering, shaking his head. "I'm sorry. It's a nice tie. It looks expensive. You must have a lot of money, to be a professional student. But you're a senior, so you are getting promoted."

He shook his head again, trying not to stare at the other boy. There was something unsettling about that put-togetherness, that detachment. Professional. Like a hit-man. "I'm a junior. I would be graduating but... Life advice. If they tell you to go to a hospital, just don't. It's a huge timesuck."
