[LOG] CLUB FAIR AT LUNCH

Who: EVERYONE
What: Lunch + Club Fair
When: End of the 2nd week of School
Where: Lunchroom and Courtyard

It's now a couple of weeks into school and it's about time for a real club fair hosted by the Student Council! Tables are set up around the lunchroom giving students a chance to talk to the different club presidents and members about joining. Lunch has been extended to an hour and a half today with a few of the teachers and students grilling up hot dogs and hamburgers for the student body. You were even given one of those little cards where you have to get signatures from 4 different club presidents proving you participated for credit!

NEWSPAPER CLUB

Talia was seated behind one of the tables, a nail file in one of her hands. She definitely was interested in the newcomers this year, after all, with her shipping out once the year was over she needed to make sure everything was going accordingly.

The Dice North Daily wasn't the...most accurate newspaper around (depending on the article you read obviously), but it was very entertaining to say the least. Journalistic integrity was all well and fine, but getting readers to think what you wanted them to was an art in itself. Leaning one arm on the table, she put on her best smile.

This was as good a place as any to get his first stamp he supposed.

"Hey." He holds out his little sheet waiting for Talia to mark it.

Talia regarded Liam as he walked up to her table, noticing his card. Based on what she knew of him he was an ok guy. The kind that didn't really think before acting, but that was nothing she needed to be concerned about. "Hello there, Mr. Honor Student," she smiled, taking the sheet from him, stamping it as she glanced over at the loud football team's table, more particularily at Clint and his megaphone. "Seems like the football team's raring to go this year like usual."

He beams back at her, happy for the recognition. "Oh-them-yeah!!"

"The megaphone helps, though that Calloway kid is pretty attention grabbing on his own."

"Clint's got his advertising gig down to a science," she mused, smiling at him again. "So, which clubs are you fancying? Not football I'm sure and I doubt newspaper." Liam didn't seem like he would be for joining the team, and she was curious. After all, the more information she had the better.

"Oh-! I'm a part of the mathletes! But I might look into tumbling or something."

[personal profile] taketheskies 2014-11-12 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Tumbling! Couldn't catch me doing that, I'd sure as hell hurt myself, but you seem pretty capable," she noted, looking over at the table dedicated to tumbling just in time to watch Diedrich fall out of his handstand. "Yeah, wouldn't catch me dead over there."

Mathletes. She just smiled and nodded, glancing at Diedrich's table, "Don't mind me if you'd like to take a peek. Poor guy doesn't look like he's getting any traffic at that table."

Pockets full of pens and candy he had collected from other booths, he made his way to the lady with a smile that just whispered 'I'm trying too hard.'

"So."

A fine eyebrow was lifted as a darker haired boy stepped up to her table. Indeed 'trying too hard' came off like a purple stain on a pure white carpet.

"Yes?" she answered, not exactly knowing what this kid was expecting. Newcomer, possibly freshman and a blank slate that she knew nothing about yet, as such she turned on her smile and leaned forward a little.

"I'm waiting for your 'join my club' spiel." He smiled, rocking back and forth on his heels. "Every good club needs a good spiel. It's how you rake in new members."

He looked thoughtful for a moment. "Well that, and fire works."

Moving back to her original position at the table she shrugged. "That's correct, but you also have to remember there's always an initial desire in everything, either you have a passion or you don't," she rolled her hand as she spoke, articulating her point. She did laugh a bit at the fire comment.

"Perhaps you should go into advertising yourself," she smiled, "You've certainly got the sparkling personality for it."

He tilted his head to the side and beamed at her. "It does sparkle a little bit, doesn't it?" His gaze traveled the booth over once more, seeming to actually take it in.

"Well, yeah, initial spark is always important, but what about he kids who don't know jack about what they wanna do? Plus, don't all clubs always try to wrangle in more members??"

"True," she agreed, leaning back in her chair then, smiling. "They do, but there's no use in convincing anyone to do something they don't like. So at this point in time I'm just looking for those who have a spark for the craft, or want to try it."

She shrugged, "I don't fancy having an uncommitted group since we're a pretty time consciencious group. Deadlines and whatnot."

Oh, they have a fair for all of their student organizations.
How.....
quaint.

Lawrence looked down at the small card in his hand. The idea of forcing participation in such a ...gathering... struck him as distasteful and bromidic. However, should the administration require him to interact with a variety of his peers, then so be it. He may as well get something out of it. So he shove his hands in his pockets, straightened up and looked around.

The school newspaper should be a good start. He put on his best 'business networking event' smile and approached the young lady sitting behind the table.

"Hello miss."

Talia sat back as someone new approached her table and it was clear he was all straight back and killer smile. Literally the smile that could kill in 3.0 seconds if you weren't careful, now that was something she could appreciate. He was pretty new from her sources, and she welcomed his approach with a pleasant edged smile.

"Afternoon, sir. What can I do for you?"

As he approached, Lawrence noticed that the girl behind the table had put on a sharp smile of her own.

Oh, he liked her.
He pulled one hand from its pocket and held it out to her, bowing just a bit as he did so.
"Lawrence Levvy. Pleased to make your acquaintance if I may. Miss...?"

"What a charmer," she commented, taking his hand as it was offered and giving it a firm shake. The bow made a small laugh escape her lips, this guy, Lawrence, certainly was something else!

"Talia," she answered his earlier question, "Talia Harkspear, and the pleasure is all mine." Drawing back her hand she laced her fingers together, leaning forward on the table. "Now that pleasantries are out of the way, do you have an interest in joining the newspaper club?"

A firm handshake. Clearly this Talia Harkspear knew what she was doing when it came to people. Excellent.
"I do in fact." He replied, straightening up and joining his hands behind his back. "Though I do have a few questions first, if you wouldn't mind...?"

"Where there's questions I usually have an answer," she leaned back in her chair, interested in the conversation she was going to have. This boy certainly seemed very prim and proper, not that she minded. It was pretty cute actually, and she didn't mind entertaining him.

"I don't mind in the slightest, ask away." She was a people person, people were the most interesting things after all.

"Excellent. I do have several, so I hope you don't feel pressured at all." He adjusted his glasses a bit higher on his nose. "And of course, if you don't have an answer there's no shame in admitting it." He cracked his smile just a hair wider, with a shade of animosity behind it.

"Anyway. Is this paper only for covering events in the school, or does it also report on events in the community at large? Or for that matter, world news? Has it received any awards or special recognition? And perhaps most importantly," He said, leaning forward over the table, "do the student reports have any special access privileges around the school or with the local media?"

Re: NEWSPAPER CLUB

[personal profile] taketheskies 2014-11-14 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The friendliness in her smile chipped slightly at the sound of his voice, and she shrugged. Better not to give him any leeway, he was someone who would no doubt take advantage of that. A man after her own heart, but incredibly annoying if left alone.

"Full of questions, aren't we?" she replied and ran over the questions in her mind for a moment before speaking. "Would you need this in writing or are you capable of remembering it all? You're asking quite a bit of me, I regret we forgot to print off brochures, Jesus Club one ups everyone again." There's some dark humor in her smile as she gets on to the point.

"The paper covers events about the school, as long as the main page sports something sport-like or something to do with horses we're in the clear for more funding, I'm sure you know Calhoun's obsession with the animals," she paused, leaving an intentional space before continuing, "But community events are usually posted as well. The paper was started up fairly recently so no awards or recognition to note yet, besides, I hardly doubt a high school paper could recieve such a thing." His last question was what she had left off for awhile.

"The student reporters don't have access to local media directly, but I've made connections through the department and we're working on getting a foothold," she regained her edgy smile "We're also in charge of morning video announcements if that's something you'd be interested in."

Re: NEWSPAPER CLUB

[personal profile] fineprintpayoff 2014-11-15 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm sure I'll be capable of remembering it." He answered smugly. "I must say though, it does seem a bit strange that a writing-centric group such as yourselves wouldn't have printed any material to distribute. However, it's also not entirely surprising that a Bible Study group is striving for such...high standards." His teeth catch on the phrase 'bible study group' like it was hard for him to say politely.
"A shame there's been no recognition for it. Some people just don't assign the value to information that it deserves." A spark appears in his eyes for just a moment at the mention of horses.
"Would this school happen to have an equestrian team then?"

Re: NEWSPAPER CLUB

[personal profile] taketheskies 2014-11-15 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
Horses. Of course it had to be horses. She nodded at his words that it was a shame for the paper not to be recognized and turned her attention then to his question. "Equestrain team? Possibly, but I don't exactly keep direct tabs on it. Considering the principal's been riding his horse to school every morning since the football team put his car on the roof, it would shock me if there WASN'T a team. I'd ask Clint or Cassidy, they could probably tell you more."

"...They put a car... on the roof...?"
How?

WHY?

What an incredibly idiotic, pointless waste of manpower. He could not believe that tHESE ARE THE PEOPLE HE WAS GOING TO BE FORCED TO SOCIALIZE WIT--
Nevermind, there were more important things to talk about than frivolous jock pranks.

A proper Equestrian team was definitely something he would gravitate toward. He wasn't told about this possibility when he first transferred to this school. How insulting.
But neither of those names meant anything to him. Dammit.
"I'm afraid I'm not familiar with either of them." He said with a neutral smile, wordlessly asking her to elaborate.
