poor bella
What was this feeling? She had never felt so confused in her entire life. About three things she was absolutely positive. First, Doris was flirting with her. Second, there was a part of her-and she didn’t know how potent that part might be-that thirsted for her signature. And third, Bella was unconditionally, irrevocably attracted and scared.
Still stunned, face turning red, and mouth still hanging open, Bella takes the sign-up sheet. She prints her name while staring at Doris (only to break while spelling her name), looking very confused, and moving her mouth to spell out words sometimes, although no words actually come out. Finally, after what seemed like hours of silence and astonishment to Bella, she says, "I just think it would be really... funny... is all..." She looks around the room.
"I, uh... I'll think about it.. Not about you, uh, being.." She stops, stares at the ground, wide-eyed.
"Oh man..." She looks up at Doris and her face gets even more red than it was before.
"I mean, I'll probably join... but who knows! Haha! It depends on how... uh, um... good I look in a swimsuit, probably." Bella was so embarrassed that she couldn't properly look Doris in the eye.

It was things like this that made running the booth really feel worthwhile.
Doris' eye followed Bella closely, and she rose briefly from her seat in leaning forward, trying to get a closer look at the name. "You have very nice handwriting, Arabella." She looked the girl up and down, carefully examining her. "Do people call you Bella? Or do they have better names for you- I bet you know them by heart." Doris stopped at Bella's eyes, staring at her. "Sweetie, honey, sugar, dear, love, kitten. Things like that."
Doris laughed a bit, grabbing the pen and setting it back with the others. "Lots of people look good in swimsuits, Bella. I just haven't been lucky enough to see you in one." She sat back down in her seat, leaning back against the frame. "But you're already starting to consider it, so maybe that will change."
