[LOG] CLUB FAIR AT LUNCH

Who: EVERYONE
What: Lunch + Club Fair
When: End of the 2nd week of School
Where: Lunchroom and Courtyard

It's now a couple of weeks into school and it's about time for a real club fair hosted by the Student Council! Tables are set up around the lunchroom giving students a chance to talk to the different club presidents and members about joining. Lunch has been extended to an hour and a half today with a few of the teachers and students grilling up hot dogs and hamburgers for the student body. You were even given one of those little cards where you have to get signatures from 4 different club presidents proving you participated for credit!

Gemi reached up to mush her cheeks and roll around the mass of sugar in her mouth to make it easier to talk.
"Issit because you're cooped up behind a table? Cause that's boring. I wouldn't want to either. I don't like being bored."
Speaking of boring, there didn't look like there was anything interesting to take from this table.
But signaturrressss.

"I've never played before! Everyone always said that I was-" She reached up and pat the top of her own head, emphasizing each of the next syllables, "Too. Short." She smiled and giggled a bit, not understanding that it was usually not a friendly comment when said to her by the local kids on the neighborhood court.

Well, she was right. She was a bit short to play basketball. But the team was so desperate to get players that they'd take just about anyone at this point. They got Toivo, didn't they?

"As long as you can shoot a ball, it doesn't matter how tall you are," Toivo said. He grimaced a little bit at how much candy was shoved in her mouth. That was pretty gross.

"You know, you're going to get cavities if you keep eating candy like that."

"It hasn't happened yet!" She answered happily. Sure, one day her good luck when it came to dental care would run out. However, right now she was 100% confident it would not be soon.

"Well let's find out then! It'd be exciting to try." Gemi half bends to pluck her signature card out of her shoe (she's keeping it tucked under the laces now, because of how often she needs to get it out), and looked around expectantly for the sign-up sheet.

Toivo pushed the sign-up sheet towards the girl and placed a pen on top of it. "By the way, what's your name? And why are you interested in joining basketball?" Might as well run the table the way he's supposed to.

She did a quick scribble and held up the sheet to show him. "My name is Gemi!" She beamed. "What's yours?"

"I like doing stuff! Like I said, being bored is boring." She conveniently didn't mention that the more things she had to do, the less time she had to spend alone or at home with her family. "Do you really think they'd take me if I've never played before?"

"I'm Toivo. It's nice to meet you," He said, extending pleasantries as best he could. She was a bit hyperactive for him.

He snorted a little at her last question and looked away. "They took me," he muttered under his breath. Then he looked back at her and smiled a little. "I'm sure you'll do just fine."

Toivo. She sounded it out in her head. Toooivooo~. "That's a neat name! I like it." She decides, simultaneously having said it out loud.

"Okay! Does it have tryouts like the swim team? When are those gonna be?" She asked, sliding the sign up sheet and her signature card toward him.

She said it wrong. "There's a 'v' in it. It's not 'toy boat'. T-O-I-V-O. A soft 'v'. It's Finnish," He explained, wincing a little. Most people got his wrong name the first couple times.

"Yeah, you have to try out, but chances are that you'll get in. Tryouts are at the end of the week, at 8." Toivo wrote his name on the signature form and then wrote the time and location of the tryouts. "Here. So you can remember."

LOL she'd totally call him toy boat

"Oh, okay!" She tried again. "Toivo. Toivo. ToiVo. Am I getting it yet?"

She took back the card and read the information he had written on it before tucking it back into the laces of her shoe.
"Wow! Thanks a lot!" That's super helpful! This Toivo boy is so nice.

it took ages for me to get people to pronounce it right

[personal profile] numberonecoolguy 2014-12-03 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's better." He smiled at her a little, though she was still kind of getting a 'b' sound in there. It was close enough.

"And it's not a problem. Just come by if you feel like it. I'm sure you'll be able to get on the team," Toivo said. And if she got on the team and was better than him, then maybe there was enough people where he could just quit.

"Oooh, it would be so exciting if I did!" Gemi wiggled a bit. "I'll definitely be there! See you later, Toivo!" She said, bouncing off into a passing group of students.

"See ya," Toivo said, waving gently as she left. He sighed and turned to doodle on some of the scrap paper he had around.
