[LOG] CLUB FAIR AT LUNCH

It's now a couple of weeks into school and it's about time for a real club fair hosted by the Student Council! Tables are set up around the lunchroom giving students a chance to talk to the different club presidents and members about joining. Lunch has been extended to an hour and a half today with a few of the teachers and students grilling up hot dogs and hamburgers for the student body. You were even given one of those little cards where you have to get signatures from 4 different club presidents proving you participated for credit!

Gemi scrunched up her face a bit, trying to talk around the absurd amount of candy she had in her mouth. Removing the lollipop didn't actually make that much of a difference.
"WELl I mean I had heard that they were a thing but I had never seen one in person so I mean yeah I guess you could say I was excited." Okay so she may have actually been quite excited. She may also actually be disappointed.
But not that much.
"But yeah, I'll sign up!!" Gemi bent down and started scribbling her information on the sign up sheet. "Wait, what club is this for again?" She asked, halfway through her name.

"It's swimming. You're at the swim team's table." Doris eyed her with mild concern. Did she...need help? Was she lost? This was really not a good place to go to for directions. Or help of any kind, really.

"Hope I'm not lettin' you down, then." She said with a small chuckle. "But I'm sure the time for an actual contest will come. Maybe take this as an opportunity to learn through observation. It'd suck to mess it up once you get the chance."

"Oh! OH OH! I like swimming!" Gemi bounced on her toes a couple times before racing through the rest of her signature.
"Does signing up mean that I'm in? Are there tryouts? When do practices start?" She twirled around a bit. "Eeeeee this is so exciting, I never get to go swimming outside of summer! It'll be so cool!" She stopped and let out a small gasp and then whispered, "Are you the captain?"

Doris stifled a laugh. please. Like anyone would trust her to lead a team of girls in swimsuits. She caused enough issues on her own. "No, no, I'm not the captain. I'm just in charge of the booth."

She sighed, tapping the cooler underneath the table with her feet. "You're not automatically in. Tryouts are next thursday after school, practices are on mondays, wednesdays, and some fridays depending on how close we get to competition dates." Doris rose from her seat, leaning over the table. "Now, with any sport, you require a certain uniform." She looked Gemi over, raising her brows. "I hope you know what that is. I can show you, if need be. Never hurts to get a preview, right?"

"Swim team would wear swim suits!" She answered, smiling brightly. Her face fell for a second though. "Right? It is swim suits? I mean, it's not like, competitive skinny dipping? ...Do you have that here too?" There was no sign that she didn't believe that competitive skinny dipping was not a legitimate sport.

"I have a swim suit!" Gemi started off quite enthusiastically, but her voice and posture deflated very quickly. "It's just...not very...y'know, like...pretty." She finished, shyly clasping her hands behind her back.

"Hah! Competitive skinny dipping..." Doris glanced off to some of the other sports tables and the kids behind them. "I wish." She muttered under her breath. She didn't look too shocked by the suggestion. She's probably thought about this before. Probably too often.

She nodded, a smile creeping onto her face. "Righto, kid! A-plus answer."
Doris' gaze lowered from the girl's face, looking closely as she looked from the shoulders on down. "We'll find you something. Wouldn't be hard to get something new for you, if it comes to it."

"Eeeee does that mean we'd get to go SHOPPING?" Gemi wriggled in happiness. "Ahh, that's so exciting!! I never get to go shopping for my own clothes! Mom usually just brings them back if something's on sale or whatever so I never get a say in it!"

Doris paused, tapping the table briefly. Shopping with this girl seemed a lot less like suit selection and a lot more like babysitting. But hey, she'd get to see a cute girl in a swimsuit. With luck, Doris would have her all season. "Shopping trip. Yeah, yeah we can make that happen. With tryouts coming up, we'd need to make this soon."
She looked up to meet the other girl's eyes. "Well congrats, you get to pick your own this time. I'll show you some of the better ones and all. Should be fun!"
Doris' clasped her hands together over Gemi's. "How exciting to have you trying for the team! I have a feeling we're gonna be great partners, don't you?"

Gemi is staring down at Doris' hands over hers, dumbstruck for the moment. Holy shit, does this mean she's made friends with an upperclassman?
Her face slowly lights up as she breaks out an ear-to-ear grin.

"Yeah! This is going to be a great year!!"

Are those honest to god sparkles in her eyes?
Yes.
Yes they are.

Doris kept her hold of Gemi's hands for a moment before slowly sliding them away, staring at her with a look of mild concern. She knew underclassmen, but this child was way too excited for her own good.

"Can't wait." She glanced around the lunchroom, trying to see if Bianca was around. Maybe she could shake this girl off.

"I'll, erm...I'll see you at tryouts, then?" She said, offering a small, lopsided smile.

Gemi bounced up and down excitedly.
"Yes! Definitely! And I'll do my best and then some so I can make the team!" She started to turn and bounce away to other tables, but paused.
"OH! I need you to sign my card thingy!"

Doris nodded. "Right. Good luck, kid." She grabbed a nearby pen and held out her hand, waiting for the card.

Gemi picked one foot off the ground and pulled the signature card out from between the laces of her shoe, where it had been woven tucked between them. She held it out, smiling brightly.

Well thats...slightly unsanitary. Doris gingerly took it from her, scribbling her name on it and trying to ignore how uncomfortably warm the paper was. She set it back on the tabletop.
"Okay. The first thing we buy you is something with pockets. We can figure the rest out from there."

"You can steal from pockets." Gemi said flatly, looking Doris dead in the eye. She was completely stonefaced, as if this was THE most serious, concrete bit of advice to ever be spoken.

Doris' eyes widened. "That...is true, I guess." Her chair squeaked loudly as she tried to scoot back, then shifting herself to face away from Gemi slightly. "have fun at the other club tables, kid." She said, pulling her phone out and tapping madly at the screen, trying to look busy.
She considered doing more of an obvious 'shoo' gesture, but hopefully this girl would get the message.

Any signs of Doris' discomfort went completely over Gemi's head, but she's tucking her signature card into her shoe in preparation of leaving anyway.

"Thanks! I'm going to stop at every single one of them!"
